GS1 and the WTO Principles for Standardisation
GS1 develops global, voluntary standards in alignment with the World Trade Organisation’s Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT), which seeks to ensure that standards do not create unnecessary obstacles to international trade.
The WTO has defined six principles for the development of international standards: transparency, openness, impartiality and consensus, relevance and effectiveness, coherence and the development dimension.
GS1’s standards are developed through the GS1 Global Standards Management Process (GSMP), which is designed to support broad stakeholder participation, balanced representation, consensus‑based decision‑making and global applicability. Through the GSMP, GS1 affirms that its standards development activities are consistent with the WTO Principles for International Standardisation.
