Standards development

The GSMP (Global Standards Management Process) is a community-based forum for businesses facing similar problems to work together and develop standards-based solutions. Standards created by industry, for industry.

A neutral participant, GS1 facilitates dialogue and the development of standards-based solutions among business and technical people from nearly sixty countries. Industries represented include retail and consumer goods, fresh foods, healthcare, transport and logistics, governments and many more.

GS1 and the WTO Principles for Standardisation

GS1 develops global, voluntary standards in alignment with the World Trade Organisation’s Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT), which seeks to ensure that standards do not create unnecessary obstacles to international trade.

The WTO has defined six principles for the development of international standards: transparency, openness, impartiality and consensus, relevance and effectiveness, coherence and the development dimension.

GS1’s standards are developed through the GS1 Global Standards Management Process (GSMP), which is designed to support broad stakeholder participation, balanced representation, consensus‑based decision‑making and global applicability. Through the GSMP, GS1 affirms that its standards development activities are consistent with the WTO Principles for International Standardisation.
