One fruit, two countries, full traceability: How GS1 standards help track every durian

Durian exports from Thailand to China continue to rise. A cross border pilot for this high-demand fruit shows how GS1 standards can strengthen trust, prevent fraud, enable safe food and facilitate digitally verifiable trade.
One fruit, two countries, full traceability: How GS1 standards help track every durian

The pilot, supported by the Asian Development Bank, connected traceability systems in both countries using GS1 standards such as GTIN, GLN, EPCIS and QR Codes powered by GS1. Each durian was labelled with a unique QR Code powered by GS1, giving access to detailed product information, including origin, grower, certifications and transport data, and enabling full end-to-end visibility across borders. Stakeholders—from customs authorities to consumers—could scan the QR Code to access transparent, trusted data at every step.
The pilot demonstrated the ability of GS1 standards to support safe, trusted trade of perishable goods between countries.
