GS1 standards are helping China’s Ministry of Commerce implement the national Home Upgraded Policy, supporting China’s transition to green consumption.

Working with GS1 China, the Ministry now uses the GS1 Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) to uniquely identify subsidised products, while Verified by GS1 serves as the real-time verification platform.

This combined approach ensures accurate product classification, validates energy-efficiency compliance, and prevents non-compliant items or repeated subsidy claims. Verified by GS1 now supports subsidy platforms across more than 20 provinces, enabling interoperability and eliminating manual audits.

With precise identification and trusted, structured product data, the GS1 solution delivers greater transparency, reduces administrative workload, improves data quality (with brands correcting errors based on GS1 feedback), and provides a scalable model for digital governance in China.
